The Mayor of London is reportedly set to receive a knighthood in the New Year Honours list

A councillor has launched a blistering attack on Sadiq Khan stating "he's not a knighted mayor. He's just a nightmare."

This follows reports that the Mayor of London is set to receive a knighthood in the New Year Honours list.

Matthew-Goodwin Freeman condemned Khan's record as mayor, telling GB News: "You run through his track record as mayor, you realise why he doesn't deserve this.

"The Mayor of London is also the Police and Crime Commissioner for London. So under his watch, violent crime with injury has gone up five per cent, gun crime has gone up 30 per cent, knife crime has gone up 13 per cent, robbery has gone up 10 per cent.

"So on crime, Sadiq Khan has failed. But let's give him the benefit of the doubt. He's also the Chair of Transport for London. That's another role of the Mayor of London.

"He promised us zero days of strikes. And guess what? He's had 140 days more than the previous two mayors combined.

"So there he's failed again. But let's keep giving him the benefit of the doubt. Cycle lanes, low traffic neighbourhoods, 20 mile an hour zones, those brilliant things that slow down our city and bring us to a halt.

"Okay, fine, we'll put that to one side. Does he declare his gifts on time?

"He got Taylor Swift concert tickets and declared them late, breaking the rules. A rule breaker is Sadiq Khan.

"But let's put that to one side. On to our favourite thing the Ulez expansion.

"We did it twice against the consultation results, 66 per cent of Londoners didn't want it but he said this would clean up the air and be fantastic for tackling climate change. Then his own report says it has a negligible impact on climate change and air pollution. But what it does have is millions and millions of pounds raking in from taxpayers in London?

"I'm sorry, he's not a knighted mayor. He's just a nightmare."

His comments echo concerns raised by Anna Firth, who referenced "15,000 families who've had a victim of knife crime."

The criticism comes amid broader concerns about public safety in London, with ex-detective Peter Bleksley describing a city where "violent criminals rule numerous neighbourhoods through violence and intimidation."

"He has completely failed on knife crime and to keep the streets safe," Firth added.

The knighthood, which will recognise Khan's political and public service spanning almost two decades, is expected to be announced alongside honours for several other political figures.

Khan, who became London's first Muslim mayor in 2016 and secured a historic third term this year, will reportedly receive the honour alongside Labour MP Emily Thornberry and former health secretary Patricia Hewitt.

The honour will be part of Starmer's first New Year honours list as Prime Minister, according to Whitehall sources.
